Seoul’s creative quarter stretches from Zaha Hadid’s futuristic silver building in Dongdaemun through the restored Cheonggyecheon stream to Hongdae’s K-pop buskers and university art scene ā a walk through the most inventive side of modern Korea. This seoul dongdaemun walking tour companion is paired with “SEOUL 4K ā Walking Around Dongdaemun Design Plaza (DDP) Street Alleys ā Hidden Vibes & Night Atmosphere” ā a detailed 4K night walk through the DDP area and surrounding streets.
About This Walking Tour
This 4K night walk explores the streets and alleys around the Dongdaemun Design Plaza (DDP) in central Seoul ā the building designed by the late Zaha Hadid and completed in 2014 that has become one of Korea’s most distinctive contemporary landmarks. The DDP’s flowing aluminium surface, covered by approximately 45,133 individual panels, curves around a historic military site and contains design exhibitions, event spaces, and a LED garden that becomes an outdoor light installation at night.
The surrounding Dongdaemun area contains one of South Korea’s most important fashion wholesale markets ā a cluster of massive shopping complexes operating 24 hours that supply the Korean fast fashion industry and attract buyers from across Asia. The Dongdaemun Gate itself (the Great East Gate, built 1396) still stands adjacent to the DDP, providing an arresting juxtaposition of Joseon-era masonry and 21st-century parametric architecture.
The broader Dongdaemun to Hongdae walk extends west along the Cheonggyecheon stream and north to Gwangjang Market (Korea’s oldest traditional market, 1905) before reaching Hongik University district ā Seoul’s centre of indie culture, K-pop street performance, craft beer bars, and art school bohemia.
Highlights of Dongdaemun and Hongdae
The Dongdaemun Design Plaza was built on the site of the historic Joseon-era Hunjiyogwan (a textile factory and military training ground) and excavations during construction revealed significant archaeological remains. The building is surrounded by an elevated LED garden ā the Dongdaemun History and Culture Park ā and the entire complex is open 24 hours.
Gwangjang Market (1905) is the oldest traditional market still operating in Korea and remains one of the best places in Seoul to eat traditional Korean street food: bindaetteok (mung bean pancakes cooked on giant cast-iron grills), yukhoe (raw beef with sesame and egg yolk), and mayak gimbap (small seaweed rice rolls with mustard sauce). The market operates under a long covered hall with dozens of pojangmacha stalls that are particularly atmospheric in the evening.
The Cheonggyecheon stream, restored in 2005 from under an elevated highway, runs 5.8 kilometres through central Seoul from the DDP westward. The stream level is below street level; descending to the streamside path removes you from the city above and provides a calm linear walking route through the heart of Seoul. In November, the stream hosts Seoul’s Lantern Festival, filling the waterway with elaborate lantern installations.
A Brief History of Dongdaemun
Dongdaemun Gate (Heunginjimun, “Gate of Rising Benevolence”) was built in 1396 as one of the four main gates of Seoul’s Joseon-era city wall. It was one of the few gates not demolished during the Japanese colonial period. The surrounding market district developed after the Korean War as a centre for fabric and garment trading; by the 1970sā1990s it had grown into the centre of Korea’s domestic fashion industry. The decision to demolish the elevated Cheonggyecheon highway in 2005 and restore the underlying stream was strongly associated with then-Seoul Mayor and later President Lee Myung-bak.
Hongdae (named after Hongik University, founded 1946) became Seoul’s bohemian district in the 1990s when art students began busking, exhibiting, and performing in the surrounding streets. The combination of a major art school, cheap rents, and proximity to Sinchon (another university district) created an independent music and arts scene. Today Hongdae is one of Seoul’s main nightlife and entertainment districts, though rising rents have pushed many independent artists to adjacent neighbourhoods.
